Oliver gave a presentation about the maintenance procedures for the Wilmington Waves project.  It was a technical audience, they appreciated the information.  Perhaps the best comments were: “why no unicorns?” and “are you a wizard?”

Thanks to Karen Marcelo for putting on this event so consistently over the years, it is always high quality and well documented.

Learning The Ropes…

Please come help design and create a new rope installation or the Ovation awards* stage!

This project, like many installations we have built in the past, will start with a series of workshops.   First we will learn about rigging for stage, rope handling, and knots.  Then we will build models and test materials as we develop full sized prototypes.  On the last day we will build the performance rigs to be mounted on stage and performed by volunteers. The goal is to build something that that hovers some place between geometric optical illusion and constantly metamorphosing phenomena. Imagine a theater of painted ropes, dancing in pre-inscribed mechanically programmed choreography that we as a group work out through models.   None of us really know how to do this, but that’s where things get interesting! Between everyone’s skills, interests and elbow grease it will be amazing.

More people = better ideas = more fun.

Survival Research Labs,   Mark Pauline’s studio was my first experience interning in the arts in the 90s.  I worked with him early in 2012 on his piece in a MOCA show and I had a great time reflecting on old times and new ideas.  When he told me he was doing a performance in LA, I was happy to fabricate a number of concrete and sonotube wobbles filled with gak for the show through a series of workshops at my studio Aperiodic Industries.  I’d specifically like to thank : Scott Bailey, Nick Vida, Saskia Wilson Brown, Glen Kinoshita, Tess Fish, Lindsey Mysse, General LA, and Adam Cottingham

Oliver launches Aperiodic Industries by beginning to host public events.   A studio for collaborative experimental art fabrication.  Please consider joining in the fun.

Oliver designed and programmed interactive projections for new wave opera, Get To Nomi,at Lamama theater in East Village only blocks from where Klaus Nomi lived!  Directed by Jason Trucco, the project was a dynamic collaboration of artists, actors and writers.

An entertaining presentation at a park in santa monica, the wind was blowing the freshly deposited mulch and we all discussed the creative relationships we have with the earth.  More info here.

Oliver’s toolbox (“dream cabinet”) is on display at the Torrance Art Museum 9.22.12 until 11.3.12, the curators will open different drawers every day.

Click link for more info, this will be a weekend long opportunity to learn about rammed earth and embed an object into our new public artwork designed to erode for the rest of our lives, revealing its contents and creating a window into geological time.  All are welcome, we will have lectures during lunch by local historians, archaeologists and park rangers.

They made and served one of my favorite dishes poblano nogales, as well as some pulled pork sliders.  We were exposed to the work of Danielle Rago and A-S-A-P then I talked about urban farming and food security which I projected into the future of independent manufacturing, individualized design, and self sufficiency within a technologically sophisticated future.

The Gun Has No Trigger is a beautiful song, and the video is going to live up to that.  I was excited to to work on the project and will link to the final product when it is released.

Saturday, February 25, 1:00 PM–3:00 PM

Collaborated on design of installation for Jason Trucco’s show Exhibit A at Annie Wharton Gallery in the Pacific Design Center has an opening on January 26th which features numerous interactive artworks and intriguing artworks related to Los Angeles popular culture and the gulf between reality and fantasy on the screen.

After a year of development, on thursday January 19th from 10am until 6pm I will be collaborating on the the dry ice installation “Disappearing Environment” with Judy Chicago and Materials & Applications.   At sunset we will light of flares and watch the ice sublimate at the santa monica airport as part of the opening to the Art Contemporary LA fair and the kick off of the Pacific Standard Time Performance Art Festival.

After several years of design, the LA Pergola’s are finally in construction.  The LA St. bridge sidewalk is closed as the construction company begins preparing footings below the sidewalk to receive the cable net support posts.  Just 23 months left until it’s completed!

A parametric project development course at materials & applications on August 7th and 8th.  This will be part of the ongoing workshop series I have been hosting and organizing all year at Materials & Applications.  This is one of the last ones and will feed into the large scale acoustic and felt lounge environment for the Dublab Tonalism party.
